end-of-year reflections

almost the end of the year already. time has simply flown by this year, it's amazing how the start of the year seemed not so long ago. i have to say, this year, as a whole, as been a fantastic one. jc life has lived up to my expectations (which i never had any anyway) and exceeded whatever i thought it would be.

the start of the year.

orientation. great experience of course. i'll never forget how i once thought those going-home-at-7pm days were tiring, when it's all but the norm nowadays. what's 7pm, when you've weathered staying in school until 10.30pm? :) it's sad though that i've totally lost contact with my og people, aside from the occasional wave when i see them around in school, and aside from fellow classmate wilson of course.

and there was 3h. funky bunch of people, funky girls, funky jaychou-sing-alike guys. haha i'll never forget alvin's and donald's constant rapping in class, which really did sound sueprbly cool :) mr lee's warped sense of humour, which we saw much more often since it was his form class. ct-rep-ing was fun, i'll do it all over again if i had the chance to. and the teachers too, ms chia, who was absolutely entertaining especially when dealing with donald. i'll never forget her expression after o-level results were released and she found out about donald's straight As. *laughs*

and there is chorale. really glad to have gained some good friends from there too. for hongking, whom i knew, but never really knew before (haha), and whom now i seem to have known for a long long time, especially after salvation army things, the internship attachment, the recent squash and table tennis session, and so many other things. for reginald and krishna, who never fail to make me laugh every conversation i have with them. i'll never forget krishna's sms to conrad, when conrad asked him who he was (cos he didn't recognise the number on the handphone), and krishna was like: "aren't you missing your most handsome tenor now?" gosh that was priceless :)

first three months were over, and although fun, they were tough. it wasn't easy adjusting to life without 412, when we had grown close especially in that sec 4 year, with the mugging together in class during recess, and all those bonds built up with our sec 3 and 4 teachers, especially for me, ms ting, mrs see and mrs cheriyan. missed all of them so much. still do. so there was adjusting, there was trying to keep in contact with all the 412 gals, and at the same time, breaking barriers and building new friendships. tough.

of course, after the o-level results, there was the big switch. higher chinese. 3H to 3L. haha i still laugh everytime when i remember how miserable i was on the first day of the change, when i went to my new class, and it was new faces everywhere, everywhere! rather frightened, especially since i felt that it was kind of my fault that yinglu got transferred to 3N since i got transferred there. felt so lonely, only really familiar face there was hweeying, and wilson. went home that day thinking what on earth was i gonna do.

it still seems funny to me, cos 3L was quite an easy class to integrate into. and now, i don't feel like an outsider anymore. i've said it before, and i'll say it again, love ya 3L. i guess we *are* a rather cliqued class, there's no denying that, but i love the fact that everyone can get along with everyone, with no one not being able to stand anyone in particular. so as cliqued as we are, we're still united! very grateful for all the friends i have in 3L, and that's everyone, but especially the ones i'm closer to in class, like emilia, shane, yihan, shuwan and rosie. milly, for listening, for standing by me, for being as sweet as you are! shane, for company, for being the fantastic person you are (haha sigh, shan't elaborate, just refer back to the thing that made you float around *grinses*). yihan, for being my fantastic shopping partner, and a great friend too! shuwan, for k-boxing, for mahjong, for "updates"! (*laughs*) which applies to shane, yihan as well i guess :) for k-boxing, for mahjong, for movies, and hopefully, soon, PS-ing! :) rosie, for being a wonderful and supportive friend, always listening, never judging, never staying angry :) really got to know everyone much better the later part of this year actually. and i can almost pinpoint it to the day. i think it has to be after my france's trip, and especially after hc's maf festival, that night when i met yihan, shuwan, emilia and kaihan at maf. it seemed that things got better and better after that, so am happy that i went for maf! haha :)

i still miss 412, that's undeniable. i miss our lovely cloudy blue classroom, with our names painted on the wall at the back of the classroom. i miss our pet hamsters, trauma, drama and one other whose name i can't remember whoops. i miss netball carnival with you people, haha with everyone contributing their part, with everyone getting to play, and dinner after that, with everyone totally sun-burnt! still i believe that although we don't see each other very often anymore, or talk to one another, we're definitely still friends, and for that, i'm thankful. :)

and for now, i'm just glad i belong to my class, and am looking forward to spending the next year (even though it's gonna be the most dreadful year of all) with all of them. :) really gonna miss rj so much at the end of next year. i've fallen in love with our worn-down campus, the at-home feeling i get, walking around the track, or sitting on the make-shift swing near the basketball court in silence, just taking in the tranquility around me. the freezing library, the musky smell of old books, and those soft armchairs that i inevitably fall asleep in. the lecture theatre, LT 1, and the tables that always fall apart, or collapse when you attempt to sleep on them. the canteen, one of my favourite studying places (with the exception of wednesdays, when the auntie is washing the floors haha). my favourite third-floor benches, even though they are completely mosquito-infested. *grinses* where else but RJ could you get such unforgettable memories? :)

cheers everyone! to the new year! :)

suddenly i see things much clearer now.

i've learnt a lot from this hols, with all the cip. although it has mostly been fund-raising, for youth challenge, for salvation army, and the giving out of brochures for the countdown party, i've definitely gained from all these.

i've learnt how difficult it is for people to stand there the whole day and approach everyone who walks by for a small donation, and getting rebuffed time after time again.

i've learnt how a smile from a stranger can make your day, so why not keep smiling, if you can make the day of so many around you while standing there, collecting funds?

i've looked at others, and learnt how lacking i am sometimes in the way i treat strangers. how when we usually order food, buy something at a counter or receive a brochure from someone giving them out, we just say what we want, take it and leave without a word. how hard could it be to give them a smile and a word of thanks? to make them feel appreciated after a hard day's work? to do something that makes them happy, and makes us a better person inside ?

i guess i have to try harder, and hopefully in time, it'll become a natural part of me and i won't have to try at all.

世界有这么完美的人吗? 自己真不敢相信, 但想来想去, 盼来盼去, 还是无法找到任何的缺陷. 这可能吗? 总而原之, 就是觉得好幸福能亲身体会到这种性格与待人的态度.

so so tired. past few days have been a whirl of activities one after the other, practically without rest. sigh.

sat was salvation army with yihan and ad :) rather fun, discounting the bell ringing (as usual). was a rather slack day unfortunately, with quite little collections, ah well.

today was yet another tired day. some gathering of my mom's office at the zoo, after which, i went to buy....

MY PSII!!!

cost me a bomb. am drained of whatever money i have now. (or rather, used to have). eeks. only have 2 games so far, am hoping to get more, just don't really know where to get them. hmm. and don't know what games to get either. haha so loser huh. rather fun so far, just that once u start playing, time seems to pass so quickly, and before you know it, 2 hours have passed, and u're like whoa. must be careful haha :) must buy more 2 player games so that can get people to play with me!

sighs. we wanted to organise another k-box outing next sunday, but then realised shane has LOTR outing with exclassmates, so no more k-box. oh sad :(

so so tired. last minute salvation army with hongking tmr. my longest stretch ever. 7 hours. *sniff* help....shall go sleep now to muster up energy for tomorrow....

yay what a fun day today :)

went down to orchard after work to do salvation army kettling with shane today from 5-9pm. sadly, no chairs today, so by the time we were finished, my knees and his ankles were aching like crazy. ouch. tried to entertain ourselves by looking out for eye candies (*thinks happy tree friends and slippery arteries!!!!*), and ooooh i spotted three of them! wow really shuai, nice hair, nice eyes, so cute!!! too bad all three were about 14 years younger than me. damn. hrmph. i wish i was born 14 years later *grinses* gave out colouring books to little children who donated. oh man, all of them were so cute! so transfixed by the ringing bell :)

one utterly embarrassing moment today though. erm we saw something falling from the sky to the ground, and it looked a lot like snow. the kind of fake snow that ice-machines make. so there i was, jumping excitedly at the view, which i sincerely believed was done for publicity by lucky plaza, and shane looking sceptically at my snow, and upon further inspection, claimed it was leaves. which it was. *sheepish* well. some hysterical laughter followed. what can i say? the epitomy of innocence versus the sceptical cynic.

those 4 dragging hours passed, and it was finally 9pm, and we were finally let off yay. the rush of freedom. decided to troop down to NYDC (!!!) and have supper. *beams* didn't want to order too much, but once we got there, the temptation was overwhelming man. in the end, relegated to the absolute sin of ordering the Destiny's oven-baked pasta and the Cookie Monster mudpie..oh man! the pasta was fantastic, with all the cheese that stretches on forever and the tomato sauce that fills your mouth with each bite of the pasta and the tasty mushrooms. whoa heaven. and if that wasn't heavenly enough, the cookie monster mudpie was THE food of the day, the week, the month. chocolate heaven! oreo heaven! we looked at it, tasted it, and sighed in unison, for there is no other better way to express the total heady rush that filled our heads, our veins as we took each bite and savoured it with relish.

the long abstinence from nydc mudpies and the sudden decision to indulge in one.

paradise.

totally zonked out.

went to city hall mrt station after work today to meet shane, yihan, julie, carol to go for the reception of mr lee's wedding. fortunately shane was earlier than me! haha thanks man :) then we were waiting for the rest, kindly ahem showing me how to play bounce. wow i feel enlightened. too bad the high score won't ever change, unless someone uses my phone and starts playing again. *sheepish* waited and waited (haha dun worry yihan, we were fine with it =]), then he was hungry so we went to get something at breadtalk. of course, destitute me with negative allowance this month (already!!!) decided not to get anything...but shane was so nice to treat me...thanks again :) so yay at least my dinner for the night was settled.

haha then after like half an hour, we called yihan and realised that he was gonna be really late, so off we trooped to suntec's food paradise, the basement central part at the fountain!!! haven't been in that part of suntec since like the last day of common tests...that's like what, 5 months?! whoa love that place, love that place! there's like everything there...nydc, kenny rogers, crystal jade....whoa *sighs* it's THE place to be at any time. we walked round and round, on the guise of looking for the atm machine, but we all know it was just to drool and take in the wonderful aroma of all the fantastic food, especially the nydc one, right? ;) gosh. looking at all the cakes was pure torture, what can i say? :)

continued walking around, found the atm machine, and shane became rich hahaha :) and then proceeded to subway to get a one foot long subway sandwich. yes you read it right - ONE FOOT LONG. gosh. can't describe my reaction when i saw it man. utter astonishment. disbelief. eye-opener of my life. and it weighed a ton. well ok not a ton, but u get the idea. i've never seen any food so big in my entire life! AND what's more, he managed to finish half of it in less than 10 mins if i'm not wrong. whoa i'm impressed.

and that's not the end of it. what followed was ice-cream at macs while waiting for the rest to join us. even more impressed *laughs* finally the rest came, and we made our way to oriental...saw mr lee yay..gave him his present...didn't manage to see his bride though, but the wedding photos were sooooo pretty! and romantic! and sweet! wow :) took photos which will probably take forever to develop since it's a new film sighs. saw a couple of teachers there too of course...mr chan, dr chan, ms chia, mr teo...and of course 3H too...haha alvin was complaining to me how he felt so over-dressed, but i thought he was dressed really nice wot! always thought that if you attend the wedding proper (unlike us), should be decked out in your nicest...:) waited a while more for the bride to no avail, so we left.

rather eventful evening today, with lots of looking and no tasting *laughs*

interview today went well! the human resource director of the esplanade was really quite nice and friendly and informative. at least she wasn't afraid to talk about the cons of the plan that esplanade implemented, which was rare. :)

urgh. project NOT finished. sighs. i think i'll rush it out tomorrow late at night, burn midnight oil like i did for project work. another reason why internship essay is exactly like pw, the last min work of it all *sheepish*

i guess i got the answers to my questions today. it's not the place, it's the things once associated with it. like that special scent that assails my nose on every other occasion, concrete, physical things that inevitably tug at my heart.

in a state of confusion.

i'll have to make a trip down to one of the places i most dread later. each time i pass it by, i look away in consternation, close my eyes and wait till it's out of my sight. it's been forever since i've been there, but the last time i was, everything's still crystal clear, scintillating with a uncharacteristic dullness in my mind. i remember vaguely the events of that night, but the feelings associated with that day are as perspicuous as ever.

i wonder what i will feel. will everything just come back in a rush, overwhelming me with the enormity of it all? will i see that day with more clarity than before, will i find peace in the midst of disarray, of shambles? will it be just like the rest, or will this be worse for after all it was the culmination of everything?

i guess i'll find out later.

had lunch with hongking at harbourfront today, and what a long lunch it was. but quite fun, just sitting there and talking and talking and talking haha.

still feeling dumb over the guessing thing. *grrr* can't believe i guessed everyone before the last one, and the reason for my obtuse-ness was because of me. *grinses* and to think hk was going, "hmmm. i don't think you know the person...*pause* yeah you might not know.." =p well haha! i was the ignition! *laughs* k that was really really funny.

love this song below. from love actually. so sad.

"Love can be a many splendored thing
Can't deny the joy it brings
A dozen roses, diamond rings
Dreams for sale and fairy tales
It'll make you hear a symphony
And you just want the world to see
But like a drug that makes you blind,
It'll fool ya every time

The trouble with love is
It can tear you up inside
Make your heart believe a lie
It's stronger than your pride
The trouble with love is
It doesn't care how fast you fall
And you can't refuse the call
See, you got no say at all

Now I was once a fool, it's true
I played the game by all the rules
But now my world's a deeper blue
I'm sadder, but I'm wiser too
I swore I'd never love again
I swore my heart would never mend
Said love wasn't worth the pain
But then I hear it call my name

(The trouble with) The trouble with love is
It can tear you up inside
Make your heart believe a lie
It's stronger than your pride
The trouble with love is
It doesn't care how fast you fall
And you can't refuse the call
See, you got no say at all

Every time I turn around
I think I've got it all figured out
My heart keeps callin' and I keep on fallin'
Over and over again
The sad story always ends the same
Me standin' in the pourin' rain
It seems no matter what I do
It tears my heart in two

(The trouble with love is) The trouble with love, yeah
(It can tear you up inside) It can tear you up inside
(Make your heart believe a lie) Make your heart believe a lie
It's stronger than your pride

(The trouble with love is)
It's in your heart
It's in your soul (doesn't care how fast you fall)
You won't get no control
(and you can't refuse the call)
See, you got no say at all

(The trouble with love is) Oh, yeah
(It can tear you up inside)
(Make your heart believe a lie)"

love actually is a wonderfully-crafted show. plots were simple, but beautiful in their simplicity. predictable, but touching in that as well. music was hauntingly magical, especially the end credits.

loved it completely. especially loved the particular story about the girl who always thought that the best friend of her husband hated her, until one day, she finds out that that guy has always loved her, in silence, and refused to talk to her and pretended to dislike her out of "self-preservation". and especially the part when he finally confessed, and in such a wonderfully sad yet beautiful way. that was a part worth crying over.

what would have happened if she had realised the truth before she got married? if he had confessed? if she had known, or sensed it earlier? are these kind of misunderstandings destructive things, with one wondering forever from then what would have happened if perhaps things were different? do we stand by what we believe, the belief that those misunderstandings aren't misunderstandings at all, but just a fact that we come to accept, or do we listen to the murmurings of the conscience, of the heart, and dissolve these believed-to-be misunderstandings?

went to orchard to do salvation army's christmas kettling with yihan..stood/sat there for 4 hours, while he rang the bell without cessation (hahaha) for those 4 hours. well done :) our ears were totally gone after that though. it was like, even after we stopped ringing, there was still a ringing sound that refused to go away. eeks. collected quite a lot though! rather impressed with the amount some people gave, like 10 bucks just like that, or 5 bucks. =] two more days to go :)

things to remember:
1. people we met!
kai and jon-jon (*grinses*). haha he's back for ns, and we're all happy for kai-kai. =]
yanghan! woohoo she looked busy. wonder where she was rushing off to ;)
lingli from rj..didn't know her, but yihan did.
mr chan! (aka jun4 nan2) whoa he looked really cool man...with spiked hair in front, and baggy clothes. so hip and happening. and the group of friends he was with was damn cool too. haha interesting social circle and life =]
saw crys while i was going home! gosh haven't seen that girl for ages, since jen's bday celebrations. great to see her again..hope the 22nd turns out for us :)

2. the spain guy
there was this guy from spain, living in singapore now, who came up to us and started recording us on his video cam. we were like "....". then he started "interviewing" us...asking questions like, "what's this for?", "what's the salvation army?", "why is it called the salvation army?"
oh gosh. had to search in the recesses of my mind to answer those questions. esp why it's called the salvation army. luckily remembered from somewhere i once read phew.

3. infatuations
erm. that's yihan with his much-awaited-for can of jia-jia liang cha. haha =]

i came back today, all prepared to talk about my day here, opened my mailbox, and received news that my church choir conductor, mrs tan shook fund, and her son died in a drowning accident in thailand.

shock. disbelief. at first when i first looked at the "subject heading", and on it was "obituary notice for shook fund and darryl", i thought perhaps one of their family members had passed on, and felt sad for them. and then, when i finally opened the mail, and found out that the notice was for them, it was just complete disbelief. a mistake perhaps, i thought, and i read on, all 29 e-mails sent by the choir people, and it was true. i turned to the straits times, and found news of her death as well.

dunnoe what to say. she was so young, and i feel sad each time i remember her telling us that she took time off from choir in June, so as to spend more time with her family. and now...it was only a couple of months ago she did that.

never knew she was st hilda's primary school's ex vice-principal in 1999 until today. even though i wasn't in that school at that time, it was my alma mater, and i don't know...somehow it makes me feel closer to her, makes me feel a connection with her. never told her before i was from st hilda's primary either.

God bless her and her son in heaven. God bless her husband who is still injured. God bless all who know her. May the Lord keep them, hold them, bless them in this time of grief.

爱像快下雨的天空, 蒙着双眼

yay finished chem revision tutorial. those that i know how to do anyway. feel accomplished :)

happy with the stack of books i borrowed from the library. and of course, the obliged two from that lengthy gp booklist. sighs. don't know how i'm going to plow through that two classics, which are really just not my type of book. but book reports are due when school reopens, and i don't think i should put it off any longer (when i already owe mrs lim two haha). ah well :)

nice song! first time i heard it was when we went kboxing that day long ago. thought the mtv was rather cool, the first part anyway haha =]

SO WHY DON'T YOU
JUST GIMME SOME PEACE I JUST WANT TO FORGET
ABOUT YOU BUT THOUGHTS JUST KEEP
ON COMIN' IN NOT WHAT'S A GIRL TO DO
I GOTTA BE STRONG JUST KEEP GOING ON
AND I REALLY SHOULD HAVE KNOWN
KNOWN ALL ALONG
KNOWN THAT EVEN WHEN YOUR'RE GONE I CAN STILL CARRY ON

performance yesterday was fun! and good too *beams* i rather enjoyed it...especially since it has been our only major performance that we could relax and just enjoy the "limelight" (i wonder what was the answer to that SAT analogy question haha), not counting SYF which was just too tense. "what sweeter music" was beautiful as usual, can't wait to hear the recording and get a copy of it. the security guard there was soooo nice! was just peering into the door before the start of the concert, looking wistfully at the stage and wishing we could at least watch the first part of it, and he told me to go on in! i was like " are u sure???" then he was like " caaaaannn....go in go in!" whoa thanks to that great person man :) so me, yingying, alex and reginald went in to watch yay. enjoyed st hilda's performance *grinses* the kids are so cute! oh yes, and my highlight of the day was seeing mrs see again cos handbells performed too *beams* sighs miss her loads...pity i didn't get to talk to her much cos of time constraint...oh yes, and her son ian was there too...rather interesting finally meeting him, after mrs see recounting so much about him before *laughs*

yay bought a new cd today! candy lo's canto album haha fun! not too bad lah the songs, then there's my favourite song for the moment too...as shown below :)

had choir pract today. how on earth to sing with an overly-stuffed nose? this flu virus is absolutely virulent (SAT word), instead of appearing for an ephemeral (SAT word) period of time, it has to persist and live off me! hrmph. so tired of blowing my nose over and over again...to date, i've used up 3 boxes of tissue, 4 toilet rolls, and about 15 packets of tissue. erps.

sigh. i still wanna watch brother bear. anyone on? or any other movie, for that matter.

concert's this sat. yay can see my little little juniors from st hilda's *beams* and of cos rgs handbells. and mrs see! gosh miss her. haven't talked to her since july. hope i meet some teachers from rgs and st hilda's too...rather fun :) too bad i'm missing class dinner cos of the concert...miss everyone in 3L, wouldn't have missed it for the world, but sigh. unfortunate circumstances. heh VCH isn't that far from marina square is it? maybe can like rush down after that bwahaha :)

my wish came true for this period of time. but do we really wish for what we really want, or what we think we want? a question my ambivalent mind has asked again and again. perhaps sometimes not getting what you hope for would be better. what if you hadn't broken the barrier, hadn't said that first word, what if i hadn't heard, hadn't replied? what if i had made a different decision before, what if you weren't you, and what if i weren't me? what if life wasn't full of coincidences, such that there never would have been? or rather, what if God didn't have a sense of humour to bring about those coincidences?

rather slack day today...finished what i was supposed to do, drawing up interview questions, writing of letters requesting for interviews to 6 organisations, my plan for the project...so started surfing the net and working on my blog template. erm, in fact my whole afternoon after lunch was spent on blog template haha...kk total waste of time, but sense of satisfaction! :)

first day at MOM today! gosh i'm supposed to do a whole project by myself sheesh. interview like how many companies, and read how many articles, and draw up a plan, pros and cons of plan, limitations, implications, how to promote plan....wait. doesn't this sound exactly like project work?!?! so much for me being done with that dreaded pw man....then again, this is more fun in comparison. BUT still...work work and more work! during holidays when i could be out shopping or kboxing or watching tv or playing computer games! argh the anguish haha :)

bwahaha back to tv =]
